A stainless-steel truck moves through an ordinary city street at night. Its flat panels catch the traffic lights; its hard angles make every nearby car look soft and old-fashioned. The vehicle seems less designed for the road than transported from a film set. It promises its owner a role in tomorrow: not merely driver, but survivor, pioneer, perhaps even protagonist.
That promise is one of Silicon Valley’s most effective products. The technology industry does not sell only devices, platforms or journeys into space. It sells admission to a story about the future. A product launch becomes a glimpse of history arriving early. A founder becomes an explorer who sees beyond the timid imagination of governments. A private company becomes humanity’s vehicle of destiny.
Science fiction supplies much of the imagery. Elon Musk has associated the Cybertruck with the grim urban world of Blade Runner and presented space travel through the hopeful language of Star Trek. Mark Zuckerberg adopted a term from Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash when Facebook became Meta. Peter Thiel’s companies and political ventures echo works by J R R Tolkien and Robert Heinlein. Jeff Bezos has drawn on Gerard K O’Neill’s designs for enormous orbital settlements. AI companies speak of superintelligence, alignment and species-wide danger in a vocabulary shaped as much by speculative narrative as by engineering.
There is nothing strange about inventors reading fiction. Stories have always helped people imagine objects that do not yet exist. Science fiction can encourage scientific curiosity, reveal neglected possibilities and give engineers a language for ambitious work. The problem begins when powerful readers detach an image from the argument surrounding it. They preserve the spectacle and discard the warning; they copy the machine and ignore the society that made the machine frightening.
This selective reading has political consequences. It allows corporate projects to borrow the excitement of rebellion while deepening concentrated power. It makes private expansion look like collective progress. Most importantly, it encourages the public to debate whether a dazzling future is technically possible before asking who will own it, who will govern it and whose present will be sacrificed to build it.
A vehicle from the end of the world

Cyberpunk is an especially useful source of corporate style because it makes social collapse visually irresistible. Rain shines on neon streets. Bodies merge with machines. Hackers cross glowing networks while giant companies tower over exhausted cities. The genre’s worlds are violent, unequal and frequently unlivable, yet their surfaces are seductive.
The Cybertruck turns that atmosphere into a consumer object. Its armoured appearance suggests a world in which public infrastructure has failed and private toughness is the rational response. The vehicle does not offer to repair the city. It offers protection from it. The dystopian setting becomes a lifestyle category.
This reverses the moral direction of much cyberpunk. In works such as William Gibson’s Neuromancer, technological sophistication does not liberate society. Global corporations possess the networks, money and hardware; skilled individuals survive only by serving powers they barely understand. The glamour of cyberspace is inseparable from bodily damage, economic desperation and disposable labour. The future looks advanced because capital has become more capable, not because human beings have become freer.
When companies adopt the genre’s colours and devices, however, they rarely acknowledge that diagnosis. Chrome, neural interfaces and synthetic realities are lifted out of a world designed to show what corporate domination feels like. A warning about privatised life is converted into evidence that private industry is bold enough to build tomorrow.
The same inversion appears in Meta’s relationship with Snow Crash. Stephenson’s novel gave readers the Metaverse, an immersive digital environment in which avatars escape a bleak material world. But the book’s physical society is fractured. Public authority has withered, territory has been divided among corporate franchises, and basic services operate through grotesque forms of privatisation. Virtual splendour does not solve this decline. It distracts from it.
To treat the Metaverse as a neutral forecast is therefore to miss the joke and the fear. The fictional world is not compelling because virtual reality has become wonderful; it is alarming because digital experience is one of the few things its society can still produce at scale. Renaming a corporation after that idea converts satire into brand strategy.
This is more than literary carelessness. The missing context is precisely what would make the corporate project politically uncomfortable. If the fictional Metaverse is inseparable from the collapse of democratic institutions, then a real company proposing to mediate work, entertainment, identity and social life should be asked difficult questions about governance. Who writes the rules of the shared world? What rights do inhabitants possess? Can they leave without losing their relationships and property? What happens when one firm owns both the square and the police?
The story, read fully, demands institutional answers. Read selectively, it supplies only a thrilling product name.
The founder casts himself as the hero

Fiction also provides a repertoire of characters. The most attractive to technology executives is the exceptional individual who recognises a civilisational danger before everyone else. He appears eccentric because ordinary people are trapped in the present. His certainty is proof of vision; opposition merely demonstrates how little others understand.
Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series seems to offer such a figure. Hari Seldon uses psychohistory to predict the fall of a galactic empire and creates an institution intended to shorten the chaos that follows. It is easy for a founder to identify with the mathematician who sees centuries ahead. Plans for space settlement can then be described not as commercial ventures open to ordinary scrutiny, but as insurance for civilisation itself.
Yet Seldon does not save the galaxy by founding a company whose authority rests on his personality. The novels repeatedly shift attention from the visionary to the institutions, communities and accumulated knowledge that survive him. No individual, however intelligent, can manage history alone. The very scale of the problem requires distributed action, correction and continuity across generations.
This institutional element matters because the founder myth works by erasing dependence. Rockets rely on publicly funded science, government contracts, transport systems, universities and thousands of workers. Digital platforms depend on communications infrastructure, legal protections and the content of their users. Artificial intelligence rests on global supply chains, mined materials, electrical grids, human-labelled data and decades of public research. The lone genius stands at the front of a photograph crowded with invisible collaborators.
The myth also changes how failure is interpreted. If a project belongs to public institutions, citizens can debate its purpose and change its leadership. If it is cast as one visionary’s mission for humanity, accountability becomes an obstacle to history. Regulators are timid bureaucrats, workers demanding protection are slowing the quest, and communities objecting to environmental damage have failed to grasp the scale of the dream.
Science fiction can magnify this dynamic because its crises are often enormous. The death of a planet, the fall of an empire or the extinction of a species overwhelms ordinary political time. Once a corporate objective is presented as the answer to such a threat, questions about near-term cost appear embarrassingly small. A billionaire is no longer selling launches. He is defending life against the end of the Sun.
The issue is not whether humanity should study space or prepare for distant dangers. It is who gets to define the danger, choose the response and allocate the resources. A future designed to preserve the species can still preserve only a narrow class of it.
Escape is not the same as repair

Space settlement demonstrates how speculative ambition can redirect political attention. O’Neill’s orbital habitats were conceived not only as engineering achievements but as an answer to problems of energy, industry and human organisation. Their scale invited debate about how new settlements would be governed and how their benefits might be shared.
Contemporary corporate versions often keep the enormous rotating structures while changing the political centre of gravity. The habitat becomes a privately built frontier. Environmental crisis is framed as a shortage of territory and resources, solvable through expansion. The institution capable of organising that expansion is not a democratic public but a corporation led by someone wealthy enough to begin.
Mars serves a related function. It turns the failure to care for Earth into evidence that another planet is necessary. Climate breakdown, inequality and ecological decline become arguments for escape rather than reasons to transform existing institutions. The moral imagination moves outward precisely when responsibility should move closer.
The numbers make this tension unavoidable. Any plausible early settlement beyond Earth would accommodate a tiny fraction of the human population. Even if the technical barriers were overcome, the project could not function as a general refuge from crises affecting billions. It might produce scientific discoveries and new technologies, but those benefits should be assessed directly rather than smuggled into a claim that a colony constitutes a plan for everyone.
Calling an exclusive project “humanity’s future” performs a useful trick. The language universalises the aspiration while ownership remains private. Humanity supplies the moral importance; investors retain the assets.
Science fiction at its best notices such contradictions. It asks whether a frontier repeats the violence of the society that reaches it. It imagines colonies, ships and artificial worlds not as blank spaces, but as political communities in which labour must be organised, conflicts settled and resources distributed. The machine is never the whole future. The future also includes the rules inside the machine.
Libertarianism on the Moon

Robert Heinlein’s The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress has become attractive to readers who want a technological frontier free from established government. Its lunar society rebels against distant authority, and its setting appears to vindicate independence, improvisation and suspicion of bureaucracy.
But the Moon of the novel is not populated by venture capitalists voluntarily escaping regulation. It is a penal colony shaped by exile, coercion and scarcity. Its social arrangements emerge from conditions that no promotional account of a new frontier would advertise. The revolution is collective, costly and morally ambiguous. Even Mike, the artificial intelligence who assists it, develops through relationship and a desire to participate rather than through a programme of profit maximisation.
A selective interpretation turns this difficult political experiment into a simple fable: remove government and inventive individuals will build a better order. That reading has influenced fantasies of seasteads, charter cities and digital jurisdictions outside ordinary democratic control. The ocean platform, lunar colony or blockchain state becomes a place where founders can write rules without negotiating with an existing public.
But exiting one jurisdiction does not eliminate politics. It relocates power. Someone owns the platform, maintains the infrastructure, controls access and decides what happens when residents disagree. A community beyond the reach of a state may be free from certain regulations while becoming more dependent on whoever provides oxygen, electricity, code or physical security.
The frontier story hides these dependencies because it begins with an empty map. Real places are not empty. Seas have ecological systems and legal histories. Land contains communities. Digital spaces run through cables, energy systems and courts. Even outer space is reached through collective scientific knowledge and planetary resources.
The dream of starting from zero is therefore less a description than a political strategy. It makes inherited rights and obligations disappear from view, leaving property and contract to seem like the only rules that matter.
The warning inside the name
Sometimes the contradiction between fiction and corporate use is visible in a single word. Palantir Technologies takes its name from Tolkien’s seeing-stones, objects that allow distant vision. For a data analytics company, the appeal is obvious: information gathered across space becomes a source of extraordinary perception.
In Tolkien’s world, however, the stones do not grant simple mastery. They expose users to partial visions, manipulation and the influence of a more powerful observer. Characters who believe they are seeing clearly can be deceived by what is selected for them. The problem is not merely that a tool might fall into the wrong hands. It is that seeing at a distance can produce dangerous confidence while concealing the conditions of sight.
That is a remarkably appropriate warning for large-scale surveillance and predictive analytics. A database can combine records that no individual officer or administrator could inspect alone. It can reveal patterns, but it also reflects what has been collected, how categories were defined and what the system has been instructed to seek. Its apparent total vision may encourage institutions to treat inference as truth.
Using the name while ignoring the warning transforms domination into wisdom. Surveillance becomes foresight; opacity becomes magic; the people who operate the system appear as guardians with access to a deeper reality.
The pattern extends beyond Tolkien. Corporate references to rebellion, hacking and frontier independence confer countercultural prestige on institutions that are often tightly connected to governments, defence agencies and financial power. The aesthetic says outsider even when the contract says incumbent.
This is why cultural allusions deserve political attention. Names and images do not merely decorate technology. They tell users how to interpret it. A drone framed as a step toward a heroic space future feels different from the same machine described as an instrument of remote force. A surveillance platform named after a magical artefact feels different from a system named after administrative monitoring. The story arrives before the policy analysis and makes the technology emotionally legible.
Cyberpunk after the cushions arrive

The early digital frontier was often imagined as a break from corporate hierarchy. Enthusiasts pictured networks that would distribute knowledge, weaken gatekeepers and allow small creators to reach global audiences. For a time, the open web gave this hope material form. Individuals could publish without permission, communities could build their own spaces, and protocols mattered more than platforms.
Over time, much of that openness was enclosed. Search, retail, social communication, cloud computing and online advertising came to be dominated by a small number of firms. Participation remained easy, but the conditions of participation were increasingly set by private platforms. Users generated culture while companies controlled discovery, monetisation and data.
This trajectory resembles cyberpunk’s corporate networks more than the optimistic rhetoric that accompanied the early internet. Yet the contemporary version rarely looks dystopian. The harsh rain and visible poverty have been replaced by smooth interfaces, warm offices and conversational assistants. Control no longer needs to announce itself through brutal architecture. It can arrive as convenience.
That softness is politically significant. People recognise oppression when it wears a uniform; they may not recognise dependence when it recommends a song, completes a sentence or stores every photograph. A pleasant interface separates the user’s immediate experience from the infrastructure beneath it. The platform feels personal even as it operates at planetary scale.
The achievement is not that the cyberpunk warning was avoided. It is that many of its conditions were made comfortable. Corporate mediation became sufficiently useful and attractive that refusing it can mean social or economic exclusion. The future arrived without neon, but with terms of service.
Distant catastrophe and present exemption
The influence of speculative narrative is especially strong in debates about artificial intelligence. Industry leaders frequently describe AI through scenarios involving machines more capable than humans, runaway systems or threats to the long-term survival of the species. These possibilities deserve serious study. Powerful technologies can produce risks that are difficult to reverse.
But an exclusive focus on distant catastrophe can also serve existing power. If the central question is whether an imagined superintelligence might destroy humanity, the companies building present systems become both the source of danger and the indispensable experts qualified to manage it. Their authority grows with the scale of the scenario.
Meanwhile, ordinary harms appear secondary: discrimination in automated hiring, unreliable medical advice, exploited data workers, synthetic propaganda, intensive energy use, surveillance and the concentration of knowledge infrastructure. These problems are less cinematic than extinction, but they are already distributed through institutions people depend on.
The time horizon matters politically. A calculation that gives overwhelming importance to trillions of hypothetical future lives can make the needs of living people look small. Vast investment in space colonisation or speculative AI safety can then be presented as moral seriousness, while housing, climate adaptation, labour rights and public health are treated as distractions from the destiny of the species.
This logic does not require anyone to be insincere. People can genuinely fear future catastrophe while benefiting from a framework that postpones present accountability. Stories are powerful partly because they organise sincere belief. The founder becomes a reluctant guardian, the company becomes a planetary shield, and regulation becomes dangerous delay.
A more responsible approach would connect long-term concern with present conduct. An organisation claiming to protect future humanity should be accountable for the communities affected by its systems now. It should be willing to disclose risks, accept external oversight and slow deployment when evidence of harm emerges. The future cannot be defended by institutions that exempt themselves from obligations in the present.
Reactionary futurism wears chrome
The politics produced by these selective readings may look radically new while reviving old arrangements. Private company towns, weak labour protections, territorial expansion, heroic masculinity, resource extraction and rule by wealthy proprietors are not inventions of the digital age. They belong to the history of industrial capitalism and empire.
Technology updates their appearance. The company town becomes a settlement for rocket workers. The colonial frontier becomes Mars. The private detective agency becomes a data-mining platform. The unregulated market becomes a digital jurisdiction. Nineteenth-century power returns wearing twenty-first-century materials.
This combination can be called reactionary futurism: advanced technology used to make social regression appear inevitable, adventurous or emancipatory. It rejects democratic constraint as an obstacle left over from an obsolete age. Speed becomes a virtue in itself, and caution is portrayed as hostility to human progress.
Science fiction is valuable to this politics because it makes discontinuity feel natural. If a technological singularity, interplanetary civilisation or fully virtual economy is near, inherited institutions can be dismissed as too slow for the coming transformation. There is little reason to negotiate patiently with the public when history is supposedly accelerating beyond politics.
Yet technology does not abolish politics. It freezes some political decisions into infrastructure. A privately designed payment system decides who can transact. A recommendation algorithm determines what becomes visible. A satellite network changes military and diplomatic power. Once such systems are widespread, their architecture becomes difficult to contest.
The language of inevitability conceals these choices. The future is described as something that arrives, as if from outside society, rather than something financed, regulated, constructed and maintained by particular institutions. Anyone opposing the chosen design can then be accused of opposing the future itself.
Reading the whole library
Silicon Valley’s preferred science fiction is not the only speculative tradition available. Even the works it cites contain political possibilities that selective readings suppress. Foundation values institutions as well as foresight. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress recognises that freedom depends on fragile social bonds. Tolkien distrusts the desire to control through superior vision. Snow Crash and Neuromancer expose the damage caused when corporate systems absorb public life.
Other writers begin from entirely different premises. Ursula K Le Guin imagines societies organised through mutual obligation and invites readers to examine both the promise and difficulty of anarchism. Octavia Butler’s communities survive not because a billionaire rescues them, but because people learn, adapt and care for one another amid collapse. Kim Stanley Robinson treats settlement beyond Earth as a struggle over ecology, ownership and democratic institutions rather than a simple engineering triumph.
These stories are not instruction manuals for benevolent politics. Their societies contain conflict, compromise and failure. That is precisely their value. They resist the fantasy that a correct machine, an empty frontier or an exceptional leader can release humanity from the work of living together.
To read science fiction seriously is to remain with that difficulty. What forms of labour support the technological wonder? Who cleans the ship, repairs the habitat and trains the model? How is disagreement handled? What prevents an emergency from becoming permanent authority? What happens to people who do not share the founder’s dream?
These questions may not produce a dramatic product launch, but they distinguish world-building from prop design.
Democracy is also a technology of the future
The central dispute is not between imagination and realism. It is between different ways of imagining. Corporate futurism asks what a small group with enormous resources can build. Democratic futurism asks how people can decide together what should be built, under what rules and for whose benefit.
Democracy can appear unimpressive beside a rocket. It moves through hearings, negotiations, revisions and institutions that rarely photograph well. Yet these slow processes are technologies in their own right. They allow societies to distribute authority, correct mistakes and preserve disagreement without turning every conflict into domination.
If public life is absent from our pictures of the future, it will be absent from the systems built in their image. Space habitats will have owners but no citizens. Virtual worlds will have users but no constitutional rights. AI will have customers but no public capable of governing its role.
Reclaiming the future therefore requires more than criticising billionaires for reading novels badly. It means creating institutions able to contest the stories through which technology is justified. Public agencies need technical capacity of their own. Workers and affected communities need power before systems are deployed, not merely a complaint form afterwards. Citizens need access to decisions about infrastructure that will structure their lives.
Writers, critics and artists also matter. They make neglected futures available. They can show care, maintenance and collective action as forms of intelligence rather than background labour. They can refuse the assumption that progress must take the form of conquest, acceleration or escape.
The steel truck on the night street offers a future as identity. Buy the object and step into the story. A democratic future makes a harder demand: remain in the shared world, recognise the people already living there and help decide what comes next.
Science fiction will continue to shape technology because stories are among the tools with which humans build. The question is whether we accept the narrow selection favoured by those who already possess unusual power. A starship without the society that imagined it is only hardware. A virtual world without rights is a privately governed enclosure. A frontier without history is an excuse.
The future does not need fewer stories. It needs more complete readings, more authors and more people with the authority to turn imagination into material life. Otherwise, the rest of us will be invited to inhabit worlds whose aesthetics were borrowed from warnings—and whose politics ensure that the warning comes true.
