A Japanese photographer’s striking, perceptive images of the Troubles
Akihiko Okamura (1929-85) was not an obvious figure to become one of the most sensitive visual witnesses of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Born into an elite Japanese family, he arrived at the conflict from a distance, yet his photographs suggest an unusually intimate understanding of life under political and sectarian violence. Created through a collaboration between Photo Museum Ireland and the Akihiko Okamura Archive, The Memories of Others explores how Okamura developed a photographic language that resisted sensationalism. Through archival footage, interviews and his quietly arresting images, the short documentary shows an artist guided by a deep moral attentiveness: one who looked not for spectacle, but for the fragile persistence of ordinary life amid fear, division and sudden brutality.
